Detect with precison

Background

In this project, we collaborated with the Umeå, Sweden police force, concentrating on creating instruments for identifying environmental crimes. Europe being the leader worldwide for protecting environment and we were given an opportunity to strengthen it further with our new approach and future technologies.

Goal

To provide a precise way of detecting contaminations on site without contact To minimize sampling errors

“Environmental crime is one of the world’s most profitable organized criminal activities. It is highly lucrative, but it is hard to detect, prosecute an d punish it. These factors make it highly attractive for organized crime groups.”

(European Union, 2023)

IDENTIFIED PROBLEMS

Rudimentary tools are still in use

No way to detect from a safe distance

Forensic results takes weeks

Tedious documentation

HOW MIGHT WE ?

Detect hazardous contaminants from a safe distance while ensuring accurate sampling and documentation for an effective investigation.

COMBINING TECHNOLOGIES

HYPERSPECTRAL IMaging

Capturing spatial distribution of chemicals across a surface by converting spectral data into images.

Visualizes "where" and "how much" of pollution is present.

+

RAMAN Spectroscopy

Detecting the molecular structure of substances through their unique vibrational "fingerprints."

Pinpointing & identifying pollution in an area.

CONCEPTS

SELECTED CONCEPT

FEEDBACK SESSIONS

After detailed discussions, curating the insights and operational needs shared by the police, we transitioned into the final concept phase.

Silhouette clay modelling .

3D scanning for CAD.

Refining CAD in Rhino.

Details sketeched on 3D prints.

USER INTERFACE

The UI is simple and easy to use. When at a new crime scene the user can start scanning the area and the scanner will denote contamination zones with the help of Hyperspectral imaging.

To activate Raman spectroscopy you have to push the trigger at a specific area on the scene marked by the laser. These spots are marked with their GPS locations

The device will recommend the high contamination spots to be set as sample spots from where the police can collect a sample and send to NFC as a proof.

USER ECOSYSTEM

The data is instantly synced to an iPad or PC to generate detailed inspection reports, including precise maps of the affected area. By verifying this data against NFC-tagged samples, Trace ensures evidence integrity, reducing administrative delays and fast-tracking the prosecution process with clear, tamper-proof documentation.
